Closure of 10 Courthouses Increases Backlog in LA County

The closure of 10 courthouses throughout Los Angeles county will no doubt cause major repercussions throughout the already overburdened system.  The courthouses to be closed include the following:

  1. Beverly Hills
  2. Malibu
  3. Avalon
  4. West Los Angeles
  5. Huntington Park
  6. Whittier
  7. Pomona
  8. San Pedro
  9. San Pedro (2nd Branch)
  10. Catalina Island

There will be substantial trial delays as the criminal and civil cases are reassigned to other courthouses. In addition to the physical location change, many court employees will lose their jobs, adding to the backlog of paperwork that already exists.  These closures follow a prior effort which closed 56 courtrooms, in an ongoing attempt to address the looming deficit.
